This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is full of bright-eyed, beautiful African American children. The majority of them are low-income and many of them are coming to kindergarten already behind. They are ready and eager to learn new things and to have new experiences.
Our school is located in the city of Detroit and we are a Title I school where all of the students in the school qualify for free lunch.
Many of our students eat breakfast at school as well. This is the beginning of their educational experience and I want to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.
My Project
These exciting STEM materials are the perfect companion for our new math curriculum, Eureka Math. Students will work together in small groups and support each other’s learning with these hands on center materials. I have requested lots of games centered around Common Core standards.
These materials will help to create lifelong learners and budding mathematicians.
Students will engage in independent math stations for 30 minutes daily. Within the first few weeks of school students will be able to independently work with these materials to solidify skills that were taught with their small groups. I will use the number bingo, number train puzzle, and the number match ups to help students identify their numbers, before they move on to the simple addition magnetic game for more of a challenge. Finally, the Build-A-Number houses will help students to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. Students will use the shapes and measurement centers, as well as the pattern block cards independently to measure, create and explore. The chart paper will be used to create brightly colored anchor charts to help with student learning. Folders are going to be used as math homework folders.
