Creating Life-Long Readers One Book at a Time!

Help me give my students high-interest books from different genres that foster their love for reading and strengthen their literacy skills. A life-like dog will provide the opportunity to read to a friend & build self-confidence.

My Students

I am a Reading Interventionist in a Title I school with pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade in Wisconsin. I work with 30 students who need additional support in order to strengthen their current reading skills. My students are currently performing below grade level, and require intensive instruction based on their individual needs and learning styles. Our school is made up of a diverse group of socio-economic backgrounds in a rural community. In our district, more than half of the population participates in the free and reduced lunch program and has a free universal breakfast program for all students.

My students are inquisitive, compassionate, and dedicated to learning.

Despite the many obstacles they face at such young ages they still come to school every day ready to learn. They shock me daily as I watch their love for learning and reading grow.

Even though reading is difficult, my students come to class and are excited about learning to read and need resources to help them become proficient readers!

I want to foster a love of reading from an early age.

My Project

My students need additional support to strengthen their literacy skills. During "Reading Intervention" we focus so much of our time on teaching phonemic awareness, phonetic patterns, sight words, and comprehension. I believe that becoming a lifelong reader is so much more than teaching the rules of reading.

In my classroom, I strive to create an atmosphere where students are actively engaged and develop a love for reading.

Providing my students access to graphic novels, fiction, and non-fiction books not just in my classroom, but also at home will help foster a love for reading. The need for them to be able to take books home is very important. Access to high-interest books will also expand their vocabulary and comprehension as they dive deep into books for enjoyment. The majority of my students don’t have access to books at home so, being able to take books home daily will increase their reading performance. I want to provide my students with the skills necessary to succeed. As Margarett Fuller once said, "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader."
