My classroom is a supplemental kindergarten classroom. My students are here all day (the same times as the first through fifth grade students). We focus a lot on reading and math during the morning. During the afternoon we attend boosters (Art, Music, P.E., Library, and Computers) and have Science and Social Studies. We also have one hour at the end of the day which is the Oral Language Block. The students have six areas to choose from to go to. The areas are the House, Block, Art, Book, Writing, and Math areas. This is one of their favorite parts of the day. They learn important social skills during this time. They work together and are very creative.
I have a diverse group of boys and girls in my classroom.
They come from varied backgrounds. Some students live out of our school boundaries and come here for the supplemental program. Due to COVID-19 many of my students did not attend in person pre-school. They did not start school with the Kindergarten readiness skills that my students have in past years. They need additional help in all areas, especially literacy.
The letter tiles and magnetic boards will be something I can use with the whole class, with small groups, and with individual students. I will be able to incorporate what I've learned in my LETRS training to help them be proficient in the early Reading skills many of them are lacking due to their lack of instruction during COVID-19. I can do more extensive teaching with them to help bring them to benchmark.
Students will be more engaged in their learning as they have their own set of letter tiles to use as we learn letter names, sounds, and start reading words.
I will be able to easily assess how they are doing as I monitor them using the letter tiles and magnetic boards. The plastic containers will help keep the tiles easily organized for them to use. They will be able to be used in many ways as I try to close the gaps from COVID-19.
