Creating Inviting Spaces in the Media Center

Help me give my students comfortable seating for our media center. The sofa and chairs will encourage collaborative work and offer a soft spot to hang out and read.

My Students

My school is located near a large military air station. 35% of our students have one or more active duty family members. 56% of our student population is military connected in some way, whether it be retired military family members or civilians working on base. Because of this, our students endure separations, frequent moves, and uncertainty. Many of these students use books and reading as an escape and they enjoy spending time in our Media Center.

The students at my middle school love to spend time in the Media Center!

They come to the library (sometimes daily) looking for their next great read, to use our Maker Space, to work on collaborative projects, and to just hang out with their friends. Our library furniture has been there since our school opened in the 90's and is not conducive to the kind of work that students do in the library today. I would love to be able to offer comfortable seating options that the kids will enjoy using and that will help them collaborate with their peers.

My Project

Our Media Center is the heart of our school, but it has outdated furniture that is not conducive to collaborative work and is not comfortable for students to just hang out and read. My goal is to create multiple seating areas throughout the library where students can work together or just sit quietly and enjoy a great book.

Comfortable seating will make the Media Center feel more inviting.

Students are in and out of the library all day working on projects and checking out books. They come in before school and during lunch periods. So many of our students suffered damage to their homes and belongings due to Hurricane Florence, and I want to be able to offer them a new, clean, comfortable spot to work, read, and relax.
