Our school has 4 Kindergarten classrooms including my inclusion classroom. Our class is comprised of 20 five and six year old students in an urban K-8 school. Inclusion classrooms have a mix of students with and without special needs. I strive to provide multiple means of engagement and representations to meet all my learners where they are. Our students come from diverse families and neighborhoods, some having previous schooling experiences and some with none. We create a community of learners together and we all strive to take ownership of our learning together.
My Project
Imagine getting into work, excited to start a new project or pick up where you left off the day before. You pull out your chair and as you try to push yourself in, your legs just will not fit under the table. You wiggle around a bit and finally settle on just being on slightly uncomfortable. Then as you are in the midst of a complex task, the table tips to the right and your pen slips making an unwanted mark across your paper. This is something my students unfortunately experience daily.
In our classroom, we have an old wooden table with wobbly legs and chairs that JUST barely fit underneath.
Often students will be working at this table, struggling to fit into the chair and find a comfortable position before settling in to write a story about their birthday. During Math Workshop it's a common occurrence to hear a crash of pattern blocks or cubes followed by shouts or cries. We are also in need of blank sketchbooks that students can use on their own to record their thoughts, ideas, and stories through pictures and words. These books will fit perfectly at this new table.
Our classroom environment is like a third teacher. It creates a warm and welcoming space for the students to laugh, learn, and create. Please help us by providing us with some new furniture to help the feel comfortable and successful when sitting down to do important work!
