Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I can vividly remember having countless books in my classroom as a child and being overwhelmed with the amount of information in front of me. My students are so compelled by history that they deserve the resources to learn!

My students are like sponges!

They are so eager to absorb anything that's in front of them! As English Language Learners, additional support is a must for understanding and retention of information. They are especially intrigued by history but aren't given the materials necessary for interested and inspired minds. If a new book is introduced to the class, they show such determination to get their hands on it. They are a fantastic group of children and deserve everything in the world.

My Project

I have requested both non-fiction and historical fiction books for my students. My students read The Birchbark House by Louise Erdrich this year, and absolutely fell in love with the character Omakayas. They find her to be inspirational and loving. This was the first class set of books my students received and we were all able to read together. Since then, their reading levels and comprehension has dramatically increased. When they discovered that the author has published an entire series of books, they went absolutely bonkers, pleading for the other books. I requested both The Porcupine Year and The Game of Silence class sets as well as supplementary non-fiction books to support their quest in learning more about American History. Westward Expansion truly opened their eyes to history and The Birchbark House is responsible for that. Louise Erdrich gave my students a hunger for learning and reading, and I'd love nothing more than to help fulfill their request.

This project will support more than four months worth of learning both reading, writing and history for my students.

I am a firm believer in integrating content into their reading and writing curriculum. Having class sets of books will help me monitor and improve students comprehension in reading and history as well as improve their writing abilities. This project will help drastically change their reading comprehension with guided reading and support in individualizing instruction.
