Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Math, Science, and Technology magnet school with a limited budget. At the present time I teach 22 enthusiastic Bilingual Kindergarten students. Being a bilingual class, I expose my students and expect my students to speak, read, and write both English and Spanish throughout the day in all subjects. In doing so, I am covering the ESL curriculum and I feel that this exposure will help my students to becoming comfortable with English when they make the transition in the future. I try to provide fun learning and speaking both languages throughout the day makes their day more productive and exiting.
I consider myself a hands-on/minds-on teacher and I believe that students learn and grasp concepts when they have the opportunity to explore with manipulatives during center time. The problem is that I do not have the necessary manipulatives to create effective centers. Most times I find myself making, borrowing, or buying my own manipulatives in order for students to have the exposure and to complete tasks. I recently received a catalog from Lakeshore Learning that is geared for early childhood learning. I have found manipulatives that can be used throughout all subjects. My students will be able to benefit from the Language Kits and Take-Home Packs to enhance their learning and expand their knowledge in class and at home. I can already picture the excitement that they will have when they are able to actually work with three dimensional manipulatives compared to the two dimensional ones that I make and also be able to take them home to share with their parents.
Helping my class with these manipulatives will expose them to have concrete concepts and stimulate their minds to higher order thinking. As they journey to a higher grade level, they will be able to use the abstract concept because their minds will have been trained to make a mental picture in any particular concept.
