Creating Global Connections Through Reading

My students need 60 copies of "The Breadwinner Trilogy" in order to participate in various interactive reading & writing activities based on these 3 compelling stories.

My Students

"A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead's words represent the passion my students have for global education. Reading enables them to create an understanding & sense of empathy for others around the world.

My students are amazing, curious, and passionate 8th graders.

They live in the beautiful mountains of Colorado. They appreciate their hometown; however, at times they find it quite isolating. They enjoy learning about different places, people, and cultures and reading novels like The Breadwinner enable them to gain a sense of global connectedness. In my classroom, I stress the importance of global awareness & community service. My students explore the concepts of power (positive & negative), change, challenge, diversity, & unity. Through these themes they realize the importance of service to others. They feel empowered to effectively make a change & a positive contribution to society. Throughout the year, students choose a service project to focus on. While reflecting on their experience, they develop empathy & compassion. They are forever impacted from this experience as stated by one of my recent 8th graders, "I now understand when people say, one person CAN make a difference."

My Project

"Political activism for peace and social justice forms a large part of my life. My books reflect the heroism of people around the world who are struggling for decent lives. It has been a real privilege for me to sit with people in many parts of the world and learn how their lives have been drastically altered by war or disease, and how they try to remain kind in spite of it all. This has taught me how fundamentally alike we all are." These words by author Deborah Ellis inspire students to see the world through a different lens. Her books empower students to learn about the world and how connected we all are.

The Breadwinner Trilogy is an example of 3 powerful stories that represent the perspectives of child sufferers during modern times.

They discuss current issues that affect children globally which has an efficacious impact on my students. Your donation would enable that to happen. Thank you for your time.
