This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Every day I have to tell eager students that they are unable to join the band because we do not have enough instruments. I am a music teacher in a socio-economically disadvantaged urban middle school in California with a diverse student population. Our district and school struggles every day to improve test scores in English Language Arts and Math, so music is not a very high priority and is therefore not funded as well as most people would like.

At the start of the year, I had to turn away at least 50 very eager future musicians because I did not have enough instruments for them to play. Many still come to my classroom often and ask, "Do you have an instrument for me to play yet? I don't care what kind of instrument, I just want to play something."

Most of the students at my school are unable to afford an instrument of their own, especially in these difficult economic times. I am trying to acquire as many instruments as I can so every child that wants to learn to play music is able to. This one saxophone I am requesting will provide this opportunity for 5 students immediately, as it will be shared by one student from each of my five classes and 5 students every year for many years to come.

With all of the budget cuts and emphasis placed on improving test scores, our school is very limited in enrichment elective courses. Many studies show that music makes students smarter. It teaches teamwork, critical thinking skills, creativity, and many other things. More importantly though, your help will bring smiles to children's faces, give students an opportunity that they would not otherwise have had and give them something fun to look forward to every day at school.
