Creating Fun and Connections in the Library

Help me give my students games and collaborative art supplies so they can connect with each other.

Mrs. B.
Grades 9-12

My Project

Our school is a public high school serving 1,700 students grades 9-12 and is the only district high school. I work in the Library Media Center. Our Media Center offers a safe space for students to bring their lunch, which is very important for some of our students to escape the loud, chaotic cafeteria. Also, our students were in middle school or freshman year when the pandemic hit. They turned to electronic devices instead of learning how to connect with their peers, so we are seeing a strong reliance on staring at a phone as a constant way of life.

Our students need ways to learn how to connect with each other, so I would like to create safe, fun ways for our lunch students to play games or do art projects together.

A further benefit is that playing games can help students develop skills like critical thinking, emotional control, sustained attention, and collaboration. These are skills that are critical to their later success in the workforce, as well as functioning well in high school.

The chosen games and activities are ones that can be played or interacted with for 15 minutes or less at a time, since lunch periods are only 23 minutes long. Our selected items are a mix of interactive games and collaborative art (rock painting, sticker art, coloring posters, and clay). Introverted students may not be willing to play a game, but they might be willing to sit next to another teen and color the same poster. Low stress connections can be made this way. The board games were chosen because they have a variety of energy levels and appeal to teens. Our hope is that all of our lunch students will be able to find something that brings them smiles and connections with peers.
