My Students

"If we ask great things of our children, we must show them we believe great things are possible." -Rafe Esquith

I teach 5th-grade at a high poverty, urban, public school.

Many students at my school come from tough circumstances. However, when these students come to school, they are provided with endless opportunities to develop into great learners, thinkers, and leaders. We value learning. Every day we work hard to fulfill the basic needs of each student, so they can focus on growing as learners. The teachers and administrators in our school go above and beyond for our students. We provide students with every opportunity to experience learning across all content areas. Despite overwhelmingly tough circumstances, we ask great things of our children, because we believe great things are possible.

My Project

What is the purpose of education? Why do we send kids to school? To learn their A,B,C's? Is it to write in cursive, or learn math facts? Elementary education is limited to what we can with a pencil, paper, and internet explorer. While these are important, I believe elementary education should go deeper.

The purpose of education is to prepare our kids to create a brighter future.

They will be the next politicians, engineers, scientists, doctors, teachers, artists, designers, architects, lawyers and ____. You fill in the blank. The point is, the education we provide should prepare students to create a better tomorrow. Sometimes, the tools we have to prepare kids fall short at the elementary level. We save the big things for high school and college. But why wait? How can we encourage our youngest students to be creative with a few textbooks and printer paper? Some skills can be taught this way, but not all of them. My dream is to create a makerspace in my 5th-grade classroom, allowing my students to use technology such as podcasting equipment and a green screen to create real products, allowing them to showcase their learning with the world.

The tools I have put in the cart will help accomplish this dream. My students will now have the capability to share their thinking through podcasts, websites, and live video. They will also be given the tools to make amazing artistic designs both digitally and by hand using the various craft supplies. These are just some of the real world skills not possible to practice in my classroom. With your help, my kids can begin to learn skills they will use in their future jobs. I believe my students will become both ready and excited to create a brighter future.
