I have a wonderful, kind, and caring group of diverse second graders. Since day one we began building a community of caring for one another. These children are eager to learn about the world around them and how they can make a difference in this world.
Help them have a safe, comfortable environment to learn in.
We all have a need to feel safe and secure. My mission is for my classroom to be a place where students have a stable, secure, safe place to spend their day. When children feel safe they are able to learn.
When talking to my students about what they wish we had in our classroom library, they mentioned some book titles to start. However, the discussion quickly turned to how uncomfortable it was to sit on the hard floor. But imagine how inviting it would be to have this brightly-colored rug to sit on while enjoying a book by yourself! My students don't want to spend more time sitting at their desks; center time is their chance to choose a comfortable working spot all around the room. The problem is that right now we don't have many cozy spots. I know that if I fix this seating problem with a soft rug, my students will be flocking to the reading corner in no time!
A classroom should be a welcoming place where students are comfortable enough to put all their attention into learning.
With only straight-back chairs at desks and the hard floor as seating, my students often avoid tasks that require a lot of sitting still, like independent reading practice. With your help, I can transform our reading corner into our room's most inviting spot by providing a comfy seating option!
