My Students

Each year new faces converge into a new room with a new teacher. It is my job to facilitate the building of a new classroom community. It is exciting to make the environment our own place with self portraits and and set the tone by sharing information about ourselves with our all about me books.

My students are fantastic inner city third graders.

We are a symphony of the best New York City has to offer. We are diverse- even within our families and have so much to learn about each other. The beginning of the year is a little scary for third graders -they know that they are part of the older grades and that this year counts.

My Project

Do you remember being a little nervous on the first day of school? Have you ever been in a new class and your best friend is down the hall? Please help me purchase multicultural paint and paper to help my students create self portraits and feel more at home in their new room. We would also love to use blank books and multicultural markers to publish books that are all about us and will highlight what we love about ourselves and our families.

Self portraits really help a bare classroom feel more homey.

Self portraits also encourage work with partners developing friendships along the way. During this time students will look closely at themselves and will sharpen skills of observation while having fun. The all about me books are shared and students are able to find new fiends who have the same interests.
