My students need items such as sensory toys, chewies, a diffuser, and essential oils to help with calming anxiety and stress at school to help create a better learning environment.
I want to create a safe, engaging and educational environment where the students in my classroom want to come and learn. I teach children with special needs in grades K-5 on a Native American Indian Reservation. 100% of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. They live in extreme poverty, often coming to school without their basic needs being met, such as wearing warm clothes, being fed, or getting a good night's rest. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
As a special education teacher, I help all the students in the school with special needs.
I need resources to help students regulate their emotions and stay focused during learning time because social and emotional needs have to be met before learning can occur.
The chewy toys can assist students with oral sensory needs. The essential oils can help calm everyone in the classroom, enhancing the learning environment. The variety of sensory toy options can help regulate various needs, increasing learning time for the individual student as well as for the rest of the class.
Most of my students require a calm down area (safe place) in every environment they are in during the school day. In each area I would like to include some stress balls, books about emotions and a timer (so they don't spend too much time away from learning.)
