Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are resilient, curios, and dedicated. They show up every day ready to learn, even when the world feels overwhelming. Many need support with self-regulation, focus, and managing stress so they can fully access learning.

This project will help me create a calming, supportive classroom environment filled with soft lighting, sensory tools, and self-regulation supports that help them feel safe, focused, and ready to learn.

This project includes ambient LED lights and color-changing puck lights to create a soothing atmosphere; visual tools like timers and clocks to support time management; and a wide variety of fidgets, stress balls, Calm Strips, and sensory toys to help students manage stress and stay engaged.

Sound-based calming tools such as meditation chimes, a serenity drum, and healing chimes will provide gentle cues for transitions and mindfulness moments, while inspirational posters will reinforce positive mindset and emotional resilience. Together, these materials will allow students to reset, refocus, and return to learning with confidence.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.

Donations to this project are now being matched, thanks to support from Olga Graham Inspiring Teachers Fund. Olga Graham, my mother, passed away in 2005, leaving a legacy of success for inner city youth. She was a dedicated teacher who inspired students throughout her life.

She graduated from Hunter College in New York City in 1927 and had a long career as an elementary school teacher in the Bronx, teaching primarily third and fourth graders. After she retired and moved to Los Angeles, she continued working as a volunteer tutor with the Los Angeles School District.

She absolutely refused to give up on any student, and inspired them with her philosophy that its never too late for second chances. This fund honors her memory and encourages other inspiring teachers to give their students another chance to succeed.
