Creating Book Lovers

My students need books with beautiful illustrations and inspiring stories that will get them to think and be creative.

My Students

My students are enthusiastic learners who enjoy school. They are high poverty, with a high population of refugee students. Many of them are English Language Learners and new to the country. My students have experienced severe trauma, and school is a safe place for them. They are very excitable and show enthusiasm for classroom activities.

Many of our students have limited access to literature at home.

In first grade, reading is a BIG focus and it is a difficult skill to learn. It is very complex and requires access to LOTS of books.

My Project

Reading to children can provide them an example of fluency, expression and how they can become good readers. I want my students to have a love for literature, and explore books across the curriculum. Each content area in the common core curriculum can include some piece of literature and a writing component.

By allowing students to explore a wide range of books they will be exposed to more vocabulary, and will know more.

Children that are read to, know more than other children. Also, it is evident in test scores that many boys' reading scores are less than girls. With a growing knowledge based society it is essential that we make boys and girls love reading. These specific books will

help integrate literature across the curriculum including math. Many of my students have suffered trauma, the self-help books will help them identify and recognize their feelings and learn what they can do to self-regulate.

The Most Magnificent Thing, Your Fantastic Elastic Brain, and The Wonderful Things You Will be are excellent books to create growth mindset. Students need to discover that their brains are a muscle, and with effort and hard work they can learn anything!

If I can create a love for reading early on in my students in First Grade, they will be better prepared for upper grades.
