A dictionary is a powerful tool. With new picture dictionaries, my students will learn new vocabulary words and become familiar with images and items that they do not see in their daily life.
In our classroom, every child in an author.
Kindergarten writers are all at different levels of writing, but each and every one of them becomes an author in our classroom. However, my students are facing many challenges that prevent them from reaching their full potential. Many students lack the basic vocabulary needed in their writing. They do not have the rich daily experiences that help build vocabulary at a young age.
Most of my students come from single parent homes and almost all receive free/reduced lunch. They have to compete with several siblings for attention at home. They are bright, inquisitive and eager learners, but need certain tools to help them achieve their potential. This is where you can help!
Writing in our class begins as a whole group. New chart paper and markers will enable us to write stories together, talking about the letters, words and writing conventions that we use. Then students can practice individually on dry erase boards, practicing sounding out words and writing sight words.
Finally, students are ready to become individual authors! They'll be able to use the picture dictionaries to look up words that they are trying to write. They might see something they had not thought of, and add more to their writing. Most importantly, the words will stick much more in their minds than if I had just told them how to spell the word!
Please help my students!
They so deserve these tools to help them have the best Kindergarten experience possible. I want all of my students to leave my classroom as prepared as possible for the rest of their school career. Being a strong writer in Kindergarten leads to being a strong writer in upper grades. You can help them be ready by donating to this project!
