Creating an Outdoor, Interdisciplinary Education Classroom

My students need 8 sampling field squares, to get them outside evaluating and studying nature in an organized and scientific manner.

My Students

Get them outside! My school has two interior courtyards, which are currently not being used for educational purposes. The field sampling squares provide an awesome opportunity to get the students outside in organized and structured learning activities and help turn the outside into a classroom.

My students are primarily minority students living in the suburban area surrounding a major city.

There are almost 900 students in attendance in a middle school building that holds sixth through eighth grade. I teach 150 of these students. The building is newer, however, the two courtyard areas - spaces secured safely within the building by design - were never fully developed to their full potential. Therefore, my students lack an outdoor education area or classroom.

My Project

With the field sampling squares, I will get students outside for organized educational activities that will help inspire a curiosity about nature and the outside. Most, if not all, classroom activities keep students at desks, as they learn about the things around them. The field sampling squares will get my students hands-on and minds-on engaged in their learning. These field sampling squares can be used for science, math, language arts, art and even social studies, as students analyze, evaluated, document and describe what they are discovering in their field investigations. Most importantly, the field sampling squares offer the students an opportunity for authentic hands-on learning. They will be examining nature within nature, and not through a video or classroom kit. The use of the field sampling squares will ensure that the learning is realistic.

Please help me get my students "outside." This one donation can potentially create multiple outdoor learning activities in multiple content areas.

Students will be able to get hands-on and engaged with nature in an authentic learning activity. The gift of these field sampling squares will potentially inspire a love for, appreciation of and dedication to our natural world. Our students need to learn about nature first hand, before we can expect them to care about it.
