My students need a variety of books to help them become fluent readers, not only to read the words but also comprehend what the author's message is to the reader.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students love to have Read Aloud time. They listen to the story and like to interject their own thoughts and comments as we read along. I can easily read 3 to 4 books with them still focusing on the story. Having more grade-appropriate books will help them to continue to enjoy reading.
My students are very energetic and inquisitive.
Most of them are continuously asking questions of why or trying to make connections with previous work. We are working on how the illustrations are connected with the works in the story. The connection between the illustration and the words help us to understand the story. So not only do we read the works, we discuss what the pictures show to make sure that they match.
My Project
The books that I am requesting will help my students get to their next reading level. The books are guided reading books that target each reading level. Not only will the books help them to with the reading skills, my hope is that they will be exposed to more interesting books so that they do not choose the same book over and over again - to give them variety and in turn become more independent readers.
My goal is for the students to get the foundations of reading skills so that they will have the tools to become fluent readers, also to expose them to different kinds of books to help them enjoy reading, and to have reading as a pleasant experience and not as a chore.
