My school is located in a quiet neighborhood, where many children walk to school. My students with special needs, including ADHD, autism, behavior challenges and learning disabilities, are part of a pilot program in my district that has implemented a fully inclusive program for all students. Each year the more restrictive model of a self-contained class is phased out and students with special needs are assigned to and supported in general education classrooms. The results have included improved self-esteem and test scores, improved social interactions, and improvement in the overall acceptance, understanding, and compassion for students with special needs.
My Project
My students with special needs are included full day with their general education peers. This is beneficial for all students as they learn about different learning styles, compassion, and kindness. That being said, everyone needs a place where they can de-stress, have some quiet alone or small group time, or regroup when needed.
While it is easy to accommodate the academic needs of my students, social-emotional wellness and regulation must be considered as well.
One of the ways I hope to accomplish this is to set up a "Zen Den." This area will be in a separate, quiet setting, where flexible, sensory seating with Giant comfy pillows is available for (any) students to complete work, take a break, or just destress and reboot. It promotes self-advocacy, helps students to be aware of their social-emotional needs, and provides a choice for students who at times may desire/require a quiet retreat.
Students will have access to sensory seating, weighted toys for regulation, fidget toys, and headphones with which to isten to music. This may be utilized by any student that just needs a break from their regular routine. It will allow teachers to help students recognize when they are becoming stressed or overwhelmed and promote self-advocacy in our students.
