it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
No student wants to come into an environment that is physically uncomfortable. It isn't conducive to learning. My classroom is unappealing. It’s dark and feels like an old storage room. The windows aren’t even real. I am trying to create a Zen environment. A Zen Classroom fosters an atmosphere of calmness, mindfulness, and emotional awareness, which significantly benefits students' social-emotional well-being when discussing potentially charged topics in social studies. A Zen-minded environment can help students regulate their emotions more effectively. My overall goal is to help them develop better emotional resilience and potentially increase their ability to handle challenges in and out of the classroom.
In addition to emotional regulation, a Zen classroom also encourages positive social interactions.
My classroom doesn't have any natural light, so I use floor lamps. The students really enjoy them instead of the fluorescent overhead lights. I also noticed that by 12:30 their district iPads need to be charged but there aren’t enough outlets. The students began to sit on the floor to charge their devices and use the chairs as desks. By incorporating modular couches as cushions or yoga mats, the space would transform into a comfortable and inviting area where students can relax while recharging their devices all while using the desk trays to complete their assignments on their iPads. It's nice to watch and listen to them work on the floor. I want to make sure they are comfortable while having classroom discussions. I would appreciate your help to continue creating the ambiance.
