My students need materials like weighted lap pad, stability balance disc, and fidget toys, to help facilitate a safe and calming environment to help combat the effects of trauma and sensory related disorders.
I'm completely blessed to be teaching first grade. My students love coming to school and are very excited about being here. My school is a Title One school where we strive to provide our students the best academic experience possible.
My students are extremely bright, motivated, and talented.
In our classroom, we have created a fun and collaborative learning environment where we celebrate differences and learn to take risks. The progress they make throughout the year never fails to amaze me! I am always so incredibly proud of the progress they make, based on their hard work.
My Project
I recently attended a training to learn more about how trauma affects students in the classroom. Kids who have experienced trauma need to feel like they are good at something and can still influence the world.
We have to find ways to empower them in the classroom.
I want to provide opportunities that allow them to set goals and accomplish them. Trauma is a sensory experience which can present itself with signs similar to ADD or ADHD. I want to create a safe classroom environment that allows my students to feel safe and supported. Fidgets will help my students feel less anxious and they will have better focus at the task at hand. There is a direct connection between lowering the stress a child is experiencing and achieving higher academic outcomes.
