Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a classroom full of three-year-olds, there is never a dull moment! My students are full of joy and energy. My classroom is in a Title 1 school, and all of the students in my class are labeled as Special Education students. As three-year-olds, this is the first time in school and away from their parents for most of my students.
As this is the first school experience for all of my students, I strive to make my classroom a place where they experience success, feel included, and have FUN!
This year the students in my classroom where greatly affected by Hurricane Harvey. Many lost their homes and were displaced, creating a great deal of stress in their lives. Despite these challenges, my students come to school each day eager to learn and grow.
My Project
One of the highlights of the school year for the students in my class is our end of the year field trip to the splash park. The students work hard all year in expectation of this trip, and the parents get excited as well. Unfortunately, due to how hard our area was hit by Hurricane Harvey this year and the losses that many of our families sustained, we will not be able to afford our trip this year.
We have decided this year that if we cannot go to a splash park with our students, we can bring the splash park to them so that they can enjoy a much earned day of fun in the sun!
Our students deserve to have a fun and exciting water day to celebrate their accomplishments over the year, and we plan to give them just that. The water slide that we’ve requested has a large slide for our bigger kiddos, and a smaller slide that is accessible to all of our students, even our friends who are in wheelchairs. The cotton candy machine will provide tasty treats for the students, and the variety of sugar flavors will allow them to practice their choice making skills. The water balloons will be used in a game with the students, promoting social interaction between our students, who sometimes struggle with this skill. We will also use bubbles as a reinforcer! We know that the students will have so much fun with this, and it’ll be just as great as going to the water park, if not better!
