Creating a STEM Friendly Classroom for All Kinds of Learners

My students need developmentally appropriate, hands-on STEM materials to expand their knowledge of how the world around them works.

This project expired on September 29, 2018.

My Students

My class is a group of sweet, hard-working students who persevere through their unique challenges every day. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and add, and some are learning to identify pictures, feed themselves, or hold crayons. All of my students work so hard to communicate with others and make sure they are heard and understood. My class loves to read, experiment, and play games. I am privileged to have many of my students from K-5. Because of this, we are a learning community with a supportive family atmosphere.

My class is lucky to be in a kind, caring public elementary school that celebrates differences and emphasizes inclusion.

My school has a large population of military students, so diverse backgrounds, experiences, and characteristics are always in the forefront of learning. In my room, my students work on skills needed to succeed with their peers, then they practice those skills in their own grade level classes. We work on strategies to access general education curriculum in whatever way is best for each individual student. Following directions, building relationships, and learning to laugh are always the most important skills! We celebrate each success, no matter how small, each day.

My Project

My students are so curious about the world around them! They are becoming excellent problem solvers and have time to practice these skills throughout the day. They are also learning how to make choices and tell others what their favorite activities are. When my students are in their general education classrooms, they are eager to try out the science materials and learn more about how things function, grow, and are assembled. Participating in STEM focused activities helps them make connections in their heads and build understanding.

In our classroom, we practice reading, math, communication, and life skills daily, but my students do not yet have access to materials that facilitate deeper practice in the field of sciences.

My students learn best not by words and lessons, but by creating and doing. By providing them with regular access to hands-on building materials, such as K'nex motorized kits, magnetic tiles, and Kidwerkz take apart toys, my students will get practical, developmentally appropriate practice in real-life job skills for the future. Both teacher-led and independent centers and experiments, such as the Blocks and Blueprints learning center, Waterways Pipe Builders, and the Geosafari Jr. My First Microscope will increase their problem-solving skills and curiosity.

Like most other students today, my students are very interested in technology and know their way around tablets and computers quite well! By introducing higher level skills, such as coding, with appropriate materials like Botley the Coding Robot, my students will have exposure to other real-life uses for technology. This project will give my students everything they need to begin exposure to a rich STEM curriculum at their individual levels.
