My Project

My middle school science classroom serves a diverse group of learners, including many students with special education needs who benefit from additional sensory, organizational, and emotional supports throughout the school day. Science is naturally hands-on and engaging, but the fast pace, group collaboration, noise levels, and multi-step activities can sometimes become overwhelming for students who struggle with focus, anxiety, sensory processing, or self-regulation.

This project will help create a more inclusive, calming, and accessible learning environment where all students can feel safe, supported, and ready to learn.

The materials in this project are designed to provide students with daily tools that help them regulate emotions, maintain focus, and participate more successfully in classroom activities and science labs.

Items such as calming light covers, a calming canopy, floor pillows, sensory bins, fidgets, and noise-canceling headphones will help students manage sensory overload and reduce anxiety during instruction and independent work time. Desk timers and dry-erase paddles will support executive functioning, participation, and communication by helping students stay on task and actively engage in lessons. Dry-erase pockets will allow students to reuse instructional materials while reducing frustration and increasing accessibility during assignments and labs. Giant coloring posters will provide students with structured calming activities that encourage collaboration, creativity, and stress relief during transitions or regulation breaks.

These resources will not only support students with identified special education needs, but they will also benefit all learners by helping create a classroom environment built around inclusion, emotional regulation, and student success. By providing flexible sensory supports and calming spaces, this project will help students build confidence, improve focus, and fully participate in meaningful science learning experiences every day.
