it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school-based occupational therapist working in Miami, FL, I work with many students under age 7 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These students demonstrate difficulties with sensory modulation, regulation, and overall processing abilities. These sensory difficulties are hindering my student's abilities to participate effectively in classroom tasks, such as fine motor tasks, visual perceptual tasks, and pre-handwriting tasks.
My current classroom does not provide for a sensory-friendly environment.
The room does not provide for quiet light, soothing sounds, pleasing smells and the opportunity to engage in various tactile, vestibular, and proprioceptive activities to promote sensory regulation. By satisfying my student's sensory needs, they will be able to transition back to the classroom to participate effectively in structured tasks.
My Project
The purpose of this project is to re-create our therapy room into a sensory friendly "oasis" for our students with difficulties in the area of sensory processing and sensory modulation. These students have a hard time navigating the school day in the form of experiencing melt downs and participation withdrawal.
The items in this project serve to give my students a fulfilling sensory experience.
The aroma therapy machine and oils will provide for therapeutic, calming olfactory experience when typical school smells become too noxious for little bodies. The crash pad and air loungers provide for deep, calming, proprioceptive input for children who seek constant movement. The teepee (with gym mat placed underneath for support) will provide for a calm, safe space for children when they are feeling overwhelmed and need a moment to process. Finally, the light covers and fiber optic curtain will strive to satisfy the need for visual stimuli while simultaneously block out harmful light from school light bulbs.
