Creating a New School out of the Morgue of an Old Hospital

My students need bulletin board paper, cork boards, and other decorations to make the halls and classrooms look more inviting for the first day of school.

My Students

Have you ever tried teaching 150 high school students in what used to be the morgue of an old hospital building? Needless to say it's not the ideal setting for learning.

The students I teach are high school students ages 16-21 who are re-enrolling in school after experiencing educational difficulties in traditional public schools.

They are seeking a more holistic style of education, smaller classes, and individualized supports. The school they attend focuses on their academic, social, and emotional needs/goals through personalized, 1-on-1 mentoring services for each student, highly qualified teaching staff, and specialized services for those with special needs. Unfortunately, this wonderful school has been housed in the basement of an old hospital building for more than 5 years awaiting the completion of renovations on an upper floor. There are no windows, stark white walls, and a limited budget with which to remedy the situation. While we have been told the renovations upstairs will finally be completed in the next few months, we will be faced with similarly stark plaster walls and blank rooms with no character.

My Project

Research has proven that visually stimulating environments greatly enhance learning, and it’s a tragedy that our students are currently being educated in one of the most drab environments I have ever seen. The students I work with are tremendously resilient. The majority are functioning 3 or more years below grade level academically. Many have faced difficulties at home and in the community, including abuse, teen pregnancy, gang violence, etc. and look towards the school as a safe haven as well as a center for learning. When they walk into the building, they deserve to be met with a setting that is respectful to them as learners and shows that a school is made from much more than just four walls and a teacher. With basic supplies like cork boards and art paper, our staff and students can transform our dismal space into a setting that is finally worthy of calling itself a school.

Due to limited funds, my school is currently unable to provide anything other than the most limited of decorations for our classrooms and hallways.

Each teacher basically has the supplies that they can afford out of their own pockets, which, on teacher salaries after a summer without pay, is not saying much. Also, we cannot hang much on the walls without cork backboards due to fire safety regulations. It would mean a lot to be able to give the students something worthy of them when they arrive.
