Our classroom is a safe place for students to come and know that no matter what is going on in their life, it is a place where they will feel welcomed and accepted by everyone. The class is a mix of general education students, special education students, and students in need of Academic Intervention Services (AIS). These students come from a variety of economic backgrounds which means that the students come to us at many different levels. Our classroom design and learning experiences help students develop tolerance for people from all walks of life. Creating a positive and aesthetically pleasing learning environment contributes to the success of our students.
My Project
Our lessons are designed around teaching students the skills needed to work in a collaborative environment. With exclusively traditional seating options for our learning environment, it can be challenging to set up our classroom in a way that provides an environment conducive to motivated, focused collaboration. When students are cognitively engaged, they are actively involved in their learning and supporting the learning of their classmates which increases student achievement. These wobble chair stools seats would help to create an environment where students can feel comfortable to utilize unique tools, which in turn will help to develop opportunities to teach tolerance.
By utilizing nontraditional tools such as wobble stools to help ALL students to be focused and motivated, those students with difficulties in these areas will not feel singled out as the only ones using something different.
By creating a classroom culture where uniqueness is valued and embraced by all, our students will be more likely to develop the important lifelong skill of acceptance. The ability to bring together students of different academic levels, different socioeconomic status, and different social groups through common experiences, students learn how to work with others and even foster new friendships. When students truly care about each other, everyone benefits.
