Creating A Literate Society

My students need hands on learning materials such as magnetic letters and word games, construction paper, timers, and markers to assist in their literacy development.

I am a first grade public school teacher in a large, urban district. I have twenty eight students who are eager to read and write to express their thoughts and ideas. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

We live in a city that has a high number of illiterate residents. I want this trend to change by starting one child at a time. There are hardly any materials available for me to use in my classroom that will make learning literacy fun and exciting. I would like to students to enjoy learning how to read and write. Through games and manipulatives this can happen.

These resources that I am requesting will help my students gain a love for literacy through fun games and leveled readers. They will be able to draw beautiful pictures on the construction paper, using the markers, and make books of their very own. They will also be able to use the timers to increase their reading fluency.

Your gift will make it possible to reverse the illiteracy trend in this area. Everyone should have the opportunity to gain a love for literacy. I feel that this project will plant the seeds for a literate society.
