Students from grades 1 to 8 come and go in my resource classroom all day. We work on English Language Arts and learning to read and write better. The students put forth a lot of effort and motivation is key. I look for fun activities that will pique their interest and keep them learning.
All of my students have special needs.
Our school is in the city and many students are Hispanic or second-language learners. The students are very fun and some are quite talkative. They are curious and energetic. It is a challenge to keep them involved and focused.
My Project
The students will be able to read Time for Kids weekly about current events. It's nice to have fresh material for them often. It generates discussion and makes writing about the topics interesting.
The younger students love to play with play dough and it only lasts so long before it has to be replaced. They practice their fine motor skills and use language to describe what they are creating. Having fun time at the end of the hour keeps them motivated and working toward a goal.
With the materials I am requesting I can complete the teaching ideas I would like to use with the students.
I create many folder activities for the students with autism. The activities are self-contained and the students can manipulate them and not lose all the pieces. I am buying velcro so they can use the folders independently and learn at their own rate.
All these various methods encourage the students to keep trying to crack the code to become better readers and writers.
