My students need a Cozy Corner Canopy, a CD/Cassette player, 24 book buddy bags, 3 Calming Colors Soft Seats, 19 journals, 72 pencils, a set of Henry & Mudge audiobooks, a treasure chest, & prizes.
My students are a diverse group of students from many cultures and backgrounds. Many live in poverty, with their families working multiple jobs to make ends meet. Each year many experience homelessness and trauma. That means developing strong relationships with each one is important. That also means creating a classroom they want to be in.
I want our classroom to be a warm, inviting place where they feel safe, are willing to take risks, and will tumble head-first into learning.
My Project
Learning to read is such an important part of what we hope 1st graders will learn. Some of my students have books at home, but many do not many books in their homes. In addition some have a lot going on once they leave school. Some families are working multiple jobs and struggle to find time to read with their children, while others are experiencing being homeless. Creating a warm, vibrant classroom offers them a wonderful place to come to learn.
This year I'd like to transform our classroom reading area into a cozy, fun place to curl up with a good book.
I want them to simply fall in love with reading. The Cozy Corner Canopy is an enchanting way to do so. The soft seats will be used in the canopy as a comfy place to sit and are in soft, calming colors. The CD/Cassette player will be used in our listening station, as the one we've had for years has broken. There is also a great set of Henry & Mudge audiobooks that are always a hit with 1st graders.
Another part of this project is having a treasure chest full of fun prizes to celebrate students' growth, being a good friend, setting and meeting goals, & being a role model. We have a mystery student each day and if that student did their best, we like to celebrate with them by having them pick something special.
