Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Through the generosity of Donors Choose benefactors, my students at last have two modern desktop computers and a printer in our classroom. The dilemma is how to properly accommodate our new technological acquisitions in order to maximize access and function.
I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!
They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development.
Technology Standards are part of the pre-kindergarten curriculum. Children are expected to achieve basic computer skills by year's end. Now that we have two computers side-by-side, students can collaborate, coach, and motivate each other. Combined with our new printer, we look forward to new adventures in learning. Unfortunately, we are without a desk and storage unit to bring everything together.
My Project
Because we have never had such a bounty of technological tools, appropriate furniture was neither a concern nor a priority. My students and I made the best of a standard 2-student desk and called it, "The Computer Center." We are now quite fortunate to have two computers and a printer that can work together, so that desk will no longer do. An Adjustable Computer Station for 2 would allow students to make the most of the new printer and computers in a dedicated area with ample space to work and learn. An 8-Cubby Unit with 8 Clear-View Bins adjacent to the station would house the various materials and supplies used in conjunction with this center. Locating software, paper, ink, headphones, student name cards, checklists, etc., nearby will minimize time spent on set-up and organization. That means we will have even more time for computer learning and fun!
For years, my students and I have endured the limitations and frustrations caused by outdated computers and the lack of a classroom printer.
Now that we have them, we'd like to optimize their use and create an area we can truly call, "The Computer Center."
