Creating a Comfortable Learning Environment

My students need new lounge style chairs that promote comfort and allow for students to read and learn in a nontraditional setting.

My Students

I teach literacy workshop, a remedial reading course for incoming freshmen. The students enrolled in this course are on average at a 6th grade reading level. The students tend to have behavioral issues and attending school daily is a struggle due to frustration, family issues and a lack of self confidence in their skills. My classrom is racial diverse, but more than three quarters of each class consists of males. The purpose of my class is to target struggling students and provide them with reading startegies that they can apply to other content areas classses. The class focuses on young adult fiction and motivations students to read through student choice.

My Project

I am working on changing up my classroom environment. I recently have been reading research on the classroom setting. I am working breaking the traditional classroom setup.

I need fun chairs to replace my desks.

I need book shelves to create our classroom library. I need to get chairs and shelving to create an atmosphere of a coffee shop.

I want to use resources to change setting of my room. Research shows that SMART schools consider the whole student, environment being one of the easiest and best way to start to address the whole student. If we focus on the whole student, I am hoping that they will become self motivated students who love to read.
