This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a very low-income area in Springfield, MA. Our school is a Level 3 school in need of further resources regularly. I teach an abundance of ELL students who need very hands-on language experiences. All students receive free lunch and breakfast each day. Despite many hardships, students come eager to learn and grow each day. I would like to give them the tools they need to succeed every day. With such diverse backgrounds, the classroom is a place where all of my students can feel at home.

My Project

As we are nearing the end of the school year, I would like to update our classroom library space. My students love sitting on our shaggy little rug and pillows for quiet reading, but they have gone under much wear and tear, and I would love my upcoming class to have a cozy space to engage in silent reading.

The library reading bench will allow students to access flexible seating, and a lot of them need choices when it comes to independent reading time.

This multipurpose piece of furniture will store books and give them a cozy place to learn! The pillows will give students another alternative for reading in the classroom library, plus we can move them around the room if need be.

Most of all, we need a classroom library rug that will withstand the wear and tear of a normal classroom space. My students love to independent read and partner read on a daily basis, and giving them a comfortable space to do this in is key for students to enjoy this time. They deserve to enjoy their books in a cozy, flexible area of the classroom. Getting students excited about reading can often be challenging, and this will really help the students get there.
