Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My 7th grade students learn in a departmentalized middle school setting within a preK to 8th grade elementary school. I teach three sections of ELA, one section of social studies, and one writing class each day. We have several students with IEPs and the majority of our students are second language learners. All of my 90 students are integrated in heterogeneous classes of varying levels and they are so curious, eager to learn, and full of energy. They love to express themselves, whether through writing, art, music, or technology. Our school is located in the inner city of Chicago, and many of our students or their parents have immigrated from other countries.

Mastering the Common Core skills required for testing doesn't have to be as boring as it sounds - that's why I have implemented Interactive Notebooks.

Each quarter my mini-lessons are focused on the following main topics: genre, narrative elements, rhetorical strategies for persuasion, and text structure of nonfiction passages. Students are given a ten minute mini-lesson each day that requires them to take notes in their Interactive Notebooks. These notes are not written directly on the page; instead, students enjoy using hands-on "foldables" that they cut out, glue onto the page, and color; then they write down the new knowledge provided in the mini lessons. Scissors and markers are necessary for the many students who don't bring their own supplies. A table of contents and index make this into a replacement for an informational textbook.

While coloring their notebooks, students can chat with their friends until the timer has finished counting down. Then, students are ready to get down to the business of notetaking. By the end of the year, the notebooks are a colorful and creative way to showcase all that they have learned!
