My Students

Within my 7th grade ELA classroom, I try to provide my students with the most engaging lessons, a space to explore their worlds, both in school and within our community, and change their mind-sets that anything is possible for those that don't give up. The students within my school district are extremely special. They work for success, even when returning home, day after day, to dangerous areas of our city where hope seems an impossible belief to hold onto. Most want a better life than what they live now as children.

While working within an urban district, with high crime and poverty rates, I have found that the best way to move my students up the ladder of success comes from engaging lessons, meaningful conversations, and passion for a better life.

Showing my students how education and knowledge is the true power to attain a better life, I constantly look for ways in which to instill not only my own passions, but how academics will aid in their future successes in life. My students love different ways to display their understanding of different topics through creative mediums, expressing their newly learned knowledge in fun and creative ways!

My Project

After researching the best classroom setups for student success and learning, it is clear that my current classroom is in need of an inspirational boost. During a recent conference, I sat, astounded, when the keynote speaker displayed a picture of a classroom in 1920 vs. a classroom in 2015. Nothing changed but the color of the photograph! Students sat in clean rows, desks in order, reading books or writing papers! Where is the inspiration? The collaboration? The comfortable furniture that allows students to relax and focus on stretching their minds....allowing them to...CREATE! Google, one of the top companies to for work in the world, allows for employees' top successes and most creative work to be done within "offices" set up in a way that fosters creativity, collaboration and thinking outside the box! Wouldn't a classroom, too, inspire students in the same way?

These materials that I am requesting will enhance my classroom environment is such a way as to give my students the opportunity to collaborate with their peers, as well as provide them with comfort to enable them to think and CREATE within our classroom.

The rug and bean bag chairs will be set up in a section of the room where students can go to review the skills and information taught within my lessons and use this newly learned knowledge in developing their project ideas, additional reading and collaboration with their partners. This ideal classroom would foster growth and learning for all students!
