Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I just can't say enough about how great it is to work with the students and staff at ALBA! ALBA students love to participate in the Arts and are passionate about learning and improving their skills in all forms of Art. My students especially love to express themselves and their cultures through their artwork.

My students desire to be immersed in Art so often that most volunteer to take Art assignments as homework.

They will eagerly miss recess time to work on their projects. Their desire to learn and create motivates me to provide them with as many avenues of creating and expression as possible. We often work together to use ideas they have seen or researched within the lessons created for them.

Greeting my students each day, seeing their smiling faces and watching their skills and self-esteem increase is exciting. Listening to their ideas about Art and how they can use Art to make sense of the world and express themselves just amazes me. Their minds are always thinking about and processing possibilities to connect what they know to their Art. I love watching them grow and I am honored to be their Art teacher!

My Project

The students at ALBA are on an empowering pathway that will afford them the ability to observe, participate in and express themselves through their bi-cultural, bi-literate lives within the Art classroom. With that being said, the goal of this project is to build the resource library in my Art classroom. Many of the books being requested are in Spanish. Also, many of the books were chosen by the students themselves.

Students need these resources in order to integrate cultural symbols, colors and images, of ancient art, into their own culturally relevant artwork.

There are many whole school events that celebrate the Latino culture in which students create artwork and crafts that celebrates their culture.

In addition to this, my students love learning to draw. They like to borrow books from me or work on a project of their own design when their assigned class work is finished.
