Let's take a minute to reminisce and create a picture in our minds.
Think back to when you were a child in school. What are the moments that you remember most? Do you remember science experiments? Games? Creating towers? Playing with friends to create something wonderful?
My students are a group of curious, playful, energetic and creative first graders who are continuously looking for new ways to explore their environment. In the short time that we've been together, they've shown genuine excitement to put their hands on materials to create and learn. Much of our day consists of reading and writing, math, and using technology to further develop our learning.
More and more research is showing that with the increase in the use of technology, children are losing their ability to play and interact with others. My goal for the 2018-2019 school year is to give my students the opportunity to play and learn with their peers by providing them with a variety of hands-on materials that they can use as they arrive in our classroom each and every morning.
My Project
First graders are often expected to sit, listen, write, and read throughout the day with minimal opportunities for play and social interaction. While reading and writing are critical components of education, play is a critical component of a child's development. Materials such as Tinker Toys, Interlox, and story cubes will inspire children to explore and create while also fostering a newfound excitement for learning.
Hands-on learning opportunities benefit learners of all ages.
