The library is a special place to go to learn and explore the world of knowledge. Libraries are transforming into media centers, moving from bookshelves and tables to creative corners and maker spaces.
Our school is located in the oldest part of town surrounded by the more recently developed foothills, so it draws from a diverse demographic.
The school instructs more than 300 students daily in grades kindergarten through 6th grade. Although the school was renovated to accommodate 21st century technology, the library's projection system is hazardous and difficult to use. The goal of this project is to improve the infrastructure, foster creativity and love of learning through the transformation of the library focused on books to a media center focused on knowledge acquisition. Our library needs an HDTV and Chromecast to make this transformation. The smart TV and Chromecast device will enable students to share their projects and learn from others.
My Project
It will support a multi-pronged initiative: student-created book trailers, after school STEM computer programming, and lunch hour extra curricula programs. Student-created book trailers will allow students to share short videos promoting books they have read. This will create an exciting environment that brings books to life. A recent author visit to our library demonstrated how powerful videos can be in introducing students of all ages to literature and instill a passion for reading at a young age. After school STEM computer programming when a student has solved a problem that other students are not figuring out, the student can cast their display for all to see. Lunch hour extra curricula programs will be facilitated by visual demonstrations of a wide range of game and craft activities.
The students will learn communication skills, video skills, and develop self-esteem as they progress from the idea that they love a book to a video sharing that passion with others.
This will give students the chance to share their knowledge in a cooperative manner, practice their presentation skills, and change the role from student to teacher. This new media center will allow our students to explore their passions and engage in hands-on activities independent of teacher direction.
