Kindergartners are rarely still. You see their minds work as fast as their bodies move. All teachers know that students do their best when they can get their wiggles out. Some students do their best standing, kneeling, or in a number of positions that only their little bodies find comfy. (not 40 year old teachers)
The more choices students have the more they they feel invested and responsible for their learning.
When I give my students choices I see greater engagement, more excitement, and a higher desire to learn. Their effort increases and there is a certain amount of pride that comes out in their work.
My Project
I would like to provide students with yoga balls, stools, inflatable chairs, pillows, and cushion seating that provides the comforts of home. I’ve acquired some gently used furniture, lap desks, and tables instead of traditional desks. I will create an environment conducive to learning in a cozy and safe setting.
Research has proven simple in-class activities can boost performance.
Studies suggest that children who participate in short bouts of physical activity within the classroom have more on-task behavior, with the best improvement seen in students who are least on-task initially.
Flexible seating is a choice provided to students, that allows them to work around the room comfortably and focused. It provides students the environment they need to be their best.
