Students at my elementary school are full of energy and a passion to learn. The students of my school are primarily African-American, Latino, or representatives of other minority groups. The school is in a Title I district and many of the students come from homes where they often go without. Many students show great potential and interest in the arts.
As the music teacher, I have the opportunity to teach every student in the school and foster the possibility of a more fulfilled life through an understanding of the arts and how they affect our place in this world.
By providing my students with hands-on learning opportunities and a comfortable learning environment, I am able to give my students the ability to take ownership of their music-making and learning.
My Project
The ukulele is a wonderful, accessible instrument for musicians of all skill levels. One of the main goals of music education is to give students meaningful music experiences. One of the most meaningful musical experiences a person can have is making their own music.
I would love to be able to provide my students the necessary foundation to learning the ukulele so that they may be able to play and sing with it all of their lives, or at least give them the foundational skills to continue learning after they leave my music room.
I've requested classroom sets of ukuleles and two additional ukuleles. We average twenty-two students per class, so I requested twenty-two ukuleles. I know my students would be so very excited to see brand new instruments to learn when we are able to return from COVID-19.
