My Students

We are Responsible, Respectful, and Ready to Learn! My 25 third grade students are excited to come to school each day ready to demonstrate our school's 3 R's. They are active, inquisitive, and have diverse backgrounds and interests. They come from homes where education is highly valued, and technology is an integral part of their lives.

Students are nurtured and encouraged to demonstrate a growth mindset and strive to "Be Awesome!" They have opportunities to demonstrate their awesomeness in a learning environment that encourages risk-taking, values effort, and facilitates the use of technology on self-directed, project-based learning activities that value process over product.

My Project

My students love to explore, discover, and create. Technology is increasingly utilized in all aspects of my 3rd grade curriculum in the form of Google Docs, Slides, and Google Classroom, as well as in web-based presentations such as Prezi. Three years ago, The Hour of Code, that introduced young children to Computer Science and the art of coding, came to our attention. We would love to have these 8 Chromebooks to bring us closer to our class goal of a Chromebook in every student's hand, and to allow for autonomy and individual creativity while designing our Scratch projects.

Scratch is an exciting new discovery for my third graders.

It is a visual block-based programming language that facilitates creation by allowing students to create anything they can dream, from interactive stories and animations, to games and art! Scratch is like "virtual lego" in that it allows students to build complex computer programs by snapping blocks together without obscure lines of code.

Our Scratch coding project will give kids the basic building blocks of software development, and the key tools for creativity and empowerment in an ever-changing world. Each student will plan, design, and create a project that will be embedded on our class website. I know they will be excited and eager to help each other learn and grow!

Since students have a more active role in their learning, they become more engaged and willing to take risks - traits that align with our Growth Mindset model and carry over to other areas of the curriculum. This project encourages students to plan, design, think for themselves, and make their own decisions - skills that are necessary in order to become productive 21st century learners.
