I teach PreK-5th grade for 45 minute periods every day. By the end of the year, I would like for my students to be exposed to ceramic projects and feel more confident in their creation of 3D art. The biggest challenge is lack of funds to purchase needed materials. Clay is the most engaging medium and almost every student says that it is their favorite thing to work with in art.
Our student population is very diverse and most are low socioeconomically.
The school has a "family atmosphere" and the teachers use a team approach. The administration values the art program and is very supportive. Many students lack exposure to hands-on art projects due to lack of funding for materials. The students respond well to a hands-on teaching approach and are very proud of finished projects. Almost every grade has asked me if they will get to do a clay project this year and I have not been able to give them a definite answer.
My students need clay and glazes in order to do ceramic projects. Art will be integrated into all areas of the curriculum through the unit on ceramics. For example, if a class is studying marine life in science, students can use the clay projects to create sea animals such as clay turtles. They will not only be expanding their learning on adaptations that turtles have, they will build knowledge in hand building and ceramic vocabulary. First grade will do a unit on how heat can change a solid into a liquid and we will be creating melted snowmen out of clay using a basic pinch pot technique. Students in second grade will create their own fossils by pressing different textures into a slab of clay. The possibilities for an interdisciplinary approach using art are endless. The teacher would serve as a guide for students, assisting as needed for the varying ability levels. Creativity and a love of art would be the result of this hands-on learning. They will also get to explore art and other subjects in a new way, through making three dimensional forms.
This project will expand on lessons that students are learning in their classroom.
Donations will enable me to have the clay and glazes needed for projects. I plan to have at least one art show this year in which projects can be displayed for parents, teachers, and students. I would love if my art show had a variety of 2D and 3D artworks, but this will only be possible if this project gets funded. This will build a sense of pride in the students to showcase their hard work.
