Crazy for Chromebooks!

My students need 4 Samsung Chromebooks, which will double our current total from 4 to 8, bringing our student to technology ratio to 1:3, yay!

My Students

My 3rd grade students are all members of the graduating class of 2028! These students were born in 2009/2010, thus making them digital natives. Technology usage comes naturally to these eager learners.

My students love, love, LOVE to read and participate in our school wide program called Reading Rangers, which involves reading a book and taking a quiz on the computer.

My students live in Henderson, a city next to Las Vegas, NV. The neighborhood where my school is located is known to be a good area; however, students in this area have limited access to technology in the classroom because of our budget. Our school has had to endure major budget cuts from our district, in addition to the fact that we do not qualify for additional Title 1 funds. As a result, purchasing technology for classrooms simply is not in the budget.

My Project

My students need access to technology on a daily basis. They use Chromebooks in the classroom to take Accelerated Reader quizzes on books they've read as well as to access other educational websites, such as Google Classroom and Xtra Math in centers. I currently have 23 students and 4 Chromebooks, making the ratio roughly 1:6.

Often times, all Chromebooks are being used and students need to wait before gaining access to the technology.

By adding 4 Chromebooks to the classroom, that would bring our classroom total to 8, double what we currently have! The students will have quicker access to technology to take the quiz on their book, thus helping them get a new book in their hands that much faster!

The students are all part of a school wide reading challenge called Reading Rangers, which encourages them to read (and quiz) on as many books as possible that are within their current reading ability and interest. As they complete their current level, they get to attend a graduation party and move on to the next level. As a result, my students love to read and quiz on their book on a chromebook as much as possible. I can only hope for my students to have more access to technology in our classroom!
