Crazy About Dragon Ball Manga

My Students

My school is a K-12 charter school planted within a neighborhood of low income apartment buildings. It is a family school where students come when they are in elementary school and stay until they graduate. My 6th-8th grade students work hard, love to read all kinds of books, and are resilient.

Our library is small and packed with the books the students read when they were in elementary school.

Even though my students love to reread books (and often do), it would be nice to have new books appropriate for their age level.

My Project

My school is a K-12 charter with 80% of students receiving free lunch and 80% English Language Learners (ELL). These two manga series will make a difference in my students lives in three ways. First, many of my 6-8th graders do not like to read. Being an ELL does not help. Manga fosters literacy by allowing ELL students to read simple English sentences independently and feel like they are reading what other students are reading (not just picture books). Secondly, I am trying to build a library for our secondary students. The students have asked for manga, specifically the two Dragon Ball manga series. Finally, many of our parents do not have time to take their students to the library or buy books for them. These books will help provide reading choices for my students and help out our parents who cannot take their students to the library.
