This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

Most of our special needs preschoolers have sensory processing struggles or may have proprioceptive input control deficits which lead to uncontrollable sensory responses. Our goal is to provide them with opportunities to build skills in self-control, fine motor dexterity, and hand-eye coordination all while providing a safe space to meet sensory awareness needs. This space will instill a calm respite from built-up emotions and stimuli, so students can return to their classrooms engaged and ready to focus.

Sensory seeking, crashing, and social-emotional dysregulation can make our bodies feel out of control!

The crash pad and tactile materials we have chosen for this project are part of a sensory exploration space we are creating to meet the proprioceptive input needs and social-emotional needs of our students. When their bodies are out of control their minds are not in the place to learn new skills and accomplish goals. We have chosen the crash pad for students to build body and space awareness, the magnetic building blocks to help with fine motor dexterity and hand-eye coordination, and the spiky balls to meet sensory and cognitive goals. Providing our students of poverty with opportunities to explore their senses, meet physical and developmental needs, and gain skills makes our hearts grow and gives us the determination to press on!
