We are a dual language campus with over 70% of our 571 students of Hispanic heritage. Currently, we have 14 dual-language classes in order to provide our English language learners (ELL) the support they need. In addition, over 80% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
Our students are eager to visit the library, love checking out books and enjoy participating in library activities.
Our students are all very special and, despite minor language barriers in a very small portion of the population, they are excited to listen to stories read aloud and eager to check out new books! Plus it is amazing how excited they can become over a simple, lesson or book-related coloring activity.
My Project
The art and building materials will be used for creative Makerspace activities. Centers may be as simple as coloring stations related to stories or as complex as construction using task card challenges. Teachers will be able to schedule their students for the library Makerspace on designated mornings each month.
Dessau students will utilize the supplies to design and create, using their imaginations as a guide, with a bit of instruction and guidance from the librarian.
This first year of library Makerspaces will be more concentrated on free exploration using a variety of media. The main goals of these activities are for students to develop creative strategies and to have fun!
