My Students

If I had to explain my students in two words, I would say inclusive and resilient. COVID-19 has decimated the high school years my students thought they’d have. Many have expressed to me feelings of acute isolation, depression and anxiety.

Yet, I'm continually amazed to see how they support each other in dark times.

When one student was expressing deep personal struggles, another student gave them a hug and said, "You are entitled to feel the way you do." I was surprised by the wisdom of that response. My students validate each other and share openly about mental health concerns.

Talking about trauma is the first vital step on the road to healing. My students are admirably fearless in sharing about their lives, supporting one another and advocating for the help they need.

My Project

COVID-19 has decimated the social and emotional health of my students. I want to help my high schoolers by setting aside class time each week to craft together while snacking. I am requesting sets of knitting needles, crochet hooks and yarn that we would use to create scarves/hats in class, but also could be checked out by individuals to craft at home.

Crafting and snacking together each week in my classroom will create a safe, relaxing, critical space for emotional and social healing to begin.

We can also bolster school spirit by giving out buttons we make on the button maker that have encouraging phrases on them. So, these materials would not only benefit my students, but our entire student body.
