This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free (Fredrick Douglas)." When Douglas wrote those words, he did not know that learning to read would eventually be equated with the survivalism of human society rather than freedom. We all know the value of reading in today's society. Virtually everything requires us to do reading. For this reason, I work diligently with my 25 kindergartners to instill strong foundational skills to help them become proficient readers.

I teach in an urban school, where family dynamics and socioeconomics vary widely.

Also, some of my students are English language learners. Therefore, my classroom community represents a wealth of experiences due to my diverse students' upbringing. However, the COVID-19 Pandemic has affected my kindergartners in many ways. A lot of my students need one-on-one support to excel in kindergarten. Some of my students have missed out on learning how to interact with other students during our year of quarantining.

My Project

Learning to read is the foundation for success in students' career in schooling and beyond. Setting a strong foundation for reading requires a very deliberate and focused instruction and time for students to apply their learning. The Hand2Mind VersaTiles Literacy kits will allow my students to apply the phonics skills they learned constructively and independently. This is especially important because we do not have the human resources that would free the teacher to teach small groups while the rest of the class is working on something constructive. These kits promote learning independently and allow the teacher to teach small groups (tier 2) instruction, which is necessary for students to internalize the learning. Cracking the code to learn how to read must happen in the primary grades; and this is exactly what these kits will promote.
