Each day, my first grade scholars recite a class pledge exclaiming that "I am here to learn all I can. To try my best and be all I am." It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential by providing an environment that is both engaging and calming.

My Project
Day in and day out, we are exposed to the harsh fluorescent lights in our classroom. It would beneficial to have fireproof light shades that would help filter and diffuse the harshness of fluorescent lighting. I have observed other classrooms with these shades, and they really help calm students down and allow them to fully engage in learning. These shades also make the learning space appear warm and inviting. In addition, studies have shown that many students with disabilities are sensitive to fluorescent lights. Imagine being exposed to this lighting 8 hours a day!
Fluorescent lights have also been shown to increase impulsive behaviors of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. To diminish these behaviors, cozy shades will soften the fluorescent lights without decreasing the ability to utilize necessary light. The shades would provide a calm environment to enhance concentration during reading, writing, math, and science.
The cozy shades will help create a warm, calming learning environment allowing all my students to be actively engaged in learning.
